The playing of the shakuhachi as identifiable tradition can be traced to the Fuke Zen Sect of Buddhism. For the followers of Fuke Zen the playing of the shakuhachi was a form of religious practice. The Tozan School is the transition from the religious to the secular. The shakuhachi has a beautiful sound, which is a challenge to produce. The process of finding the sound can be a process that is engaging, mindful, and rewarding.
