About the Speaker
Brant Horio, PhD, comes to the Dharma by way of systems thinking, computational social science, and complexity—fields that ask how patterns emerge and adapt in a changing world. A member of Ekoji Buddhist Temple in Fairfax Station, VA, Brant is fascinated by how technology and science can open new doors to understanding and sharing the Dharma, offering fresh ways to navigate the impermanence and constant change of modern life.

The Middle Path in the Age of AI: Navigating Between the Fear and the Hype
Demystifies generative AI for the broader Buddhist community, offering accessible functional knowledge about what AI is, what it can and cannot do, and why it matters to temples, ministers, Dharma schools, and lay practitioners. Rather than approaching AI through either fear or technological inevitability, the talk explores a Buddhist middle path toward engaging these tools with curiosity, discernment, compassion, and appropriate boundaries.
Part II, Saturday, October 10 | 9:00 a.m. – Noon
The Middle Path in the Age of AI: From Possibility to Practice
Moves from understanding AI to imagining what Buddhist communities might actually do with it. Through examples spanning Dharma study, translation, teaching, music, creative media, vibe-coded applications, prompting, and agentic systems, the talk explores how AI might amplify the work of temples while managing its risks and preserving human judgment. It concludes with a call to build shared tools, practices, repositories, and guidance for ministers, teachers, students, and laypeople.
