Buddhism and AI: Two Seminars October 9 & 10, 2026, with Brant Horio, PhD

The Buddhist Study Center and BDK Hawaii invite you to a special two-part seminar exploring Buddhism and artificial intelligence with Brant Horio, PhD, on Friday, October 9, from 6–8 p.m., and Saturday, October 10, from 9 a.m.–noon. Participants may attend in person at the Buddhist Study Center or online via Zoom.

Under the theme “The Middle Path in the Age of AI,” Dr. Horio will explore how Buddhist communities can approach rapidly developing AI technology without falling into either fear or hype. Friday’s session will demystify generative AI and consider what it can—and cannot—do, while Saturday’s session moves from understanding to practice, with examples involving Dharma study, translation, teaching, creative media, prompting, and other possible uses in Buddhist communities.

Dr. Horio brings a background in systems thinking, computational social science, and complexity, along with his perspective as a member of Ekoji Buddhist Temple in Virginia. The seminars will consider how AI might support the work of temples and Dharma communities while preserving human judgment, appropriate boundaries, and Buddhist values.
